Well, considering the fact that Leicester City currently sit third in the league table, with Jamie Vardy on the verge of breaking Premier League goal-scoring records left, right and centre, now would seem like a rather inopportune moment to start criticising the former Stocksbridge Park Steels man for his exploits out on the pitch.
And why would you? After experiencing a less than savoury exchange with a casino goer this summer – a moment in which the Premier League’s surprise star must totally regret no doubt – Vardy has nonetheless taken to his footballing duties with real success this term. From scoring in back-to-back league matches at a very admirable rate indeed to helping his side maintain their lofty position among the English top-flight, Leicester City seem to have found themselves somewhat of a gem on their hands all of a sudden.
His mammoth rise from non-league football all the way up to the glitz and glamour of the Premier League scene has certainly been impressive, for it’s a notion we very rarely come across in this ever competitive modern era. Vardy potentially even encapsulates one of the most memorable ‘zero to hero’ stories we’ve seen in this country for a very long time…
However, as much as Leicester City fans must obviously be enjoying the exploits of Vardy at the minute, this particular hype-train simply won’t last forever. The 28-year-old forward has had a blinding start to the 2015/16 campaign – no one in their right mind could possibly argue against such a fact – but is he really the potential top-class talent many have recently painted him out to be? Of course not.
In the cold light of day, a handful of Vardy’s goals this term have conveniently come from the penalty-spot, the recent Three Lions squad member just doesn’t possess a vast amount of technical ability with all things considered and even in the eyes of the most optimistic Foxes fans out there, Leicester City are simply bound to fall sooner rather than later, for Ranieri’s fixture list so far in 2015/16 has been rather generous to say the very least.
The Foxes still deserve a great deal of credit this term for providing the Premier League with some truly entertaining fixtures, but as Jamie Vardy has rather carelessly been linked to illustrious moves to Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool of late it’s certainly fair to say that the recent hype surrounding Ranieri’s team has undoubtedly got out of hand.
Vardy is arguably little more than a handy player who works effectively in a side that prioritise the counter-attacking side of the game. Pace is his main asset within the grand scheme of things, and whilst there’s obviously nothing wrong with that, you don’t have to be a good footballer to be quick with the ball at your feet. Perhaps even the most cynical Vardy watcher this term could even call into question his recent England call-up, in light of the fact that he’s only really impressed for less than half a season.
The King Power faithful will nonetheless have something to say to any determined critic of their rapidly emerging star, for Ranieri’s team will rightfully believe that they can go on to achieve even more this term. For the rest of us however, Jamie Vardy’s impressive start to the 2015/16 campaign will most likely come to a rather abrupt end in the not too distant future – and all the hype circulating among the English top-flight will have to find another ill-advised target to pounce upon.
