So then, now that Jurgen Klopp’s new side have recently been linked with Marseille’s Steve Mandanda in the run up to the upcoming January transfer window, is it time a new goalkeeper was finally sourced for the Reds this winter? Has Mignolet reached the end of the road at Anfield, and does Mandanda really represent the right kind of replacement to help take the club move forward under their newly-installed German tactician?
Well, as the former French international could be on the move for as little as £2.95 million in the not too distant future, perhaps Jurgen Klopp would be mad to let this one slip through his grasp in the January transfer window.
Adam Bogdan has hardly shone in the most impressive of lights when offered the chance to step in for Mignolet this campaign, so maybe Liverpool do in fact need to sign another goalkeeper – regardless of whether or not the Belgian shot-stopper is issued with the full confidence of his manager for the rest of the season.
Steve Mandanda nonetheless represents a very solid candidate for the Reds’ hierarchy to cast their eye over. After representing France on the international scene, making countless appearances for Marseille in the French Ligue 1 and simply doing the business for his side between the sticks far more often than not for some time now, the 30-year-old seemingly knows how to get the job done with relatively little fuss.
The reliable DR Congo-born star in no way resembles anything close to a world-class goalkeeper, but as Mandanda has arguably been somewhat under-rated during his long-term stint on the European footballing scene, Liverpool really could find themselves with worse options on their hands this January.
… And although such a somewhat harsh turn of events does indeed seem a tad unfortunate for Mignolet and his ever fluctuating Liverpool career, maybe Jurgen Klopp has been left with no choice but to look for a new ‘keeper this season. Any player tasked with guarding the Anfield goalmouth is always going to make mistakes throughout their career after all, it’s simply inevitable – but because the former Sunderland man hasn’t proven able to learn from many of his previous errors in the past, perhaps the writing is now well and truly on the wall for the 27-year-old.
When it comes to successfully commanding his box from set-pieces and the like, maintaining a sense of confidence when coming out from his line in chaotic circumstances, as well as ultimately offering his back-line a resolute last resort to help get his team out of trouble on most given occasions, Mignolet has seemingly failed to deliver. He is by no means a bad goalkeeper, just a player not quite able to reach the increasingly lofty expectations of the Anfield faithful when all is said and done.
As the Reds have also been linked with the likes of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Federico Marchetti, and Fernando Muslera in the run up to the January transfer window, it seems as if Mignolet’s future on Merseyside is looking incredibly murky.
So then, with Marseille’s Steve Mandanda arguably representing the best value for money out of all the aforementioned ‘keepers on offer this winter, Liverpool ultimately shouldn’t think twice when considering his services next month – especially for as little as £2.95 million!
