da dobrowin: There is real reason why Jurgen Klopp was brought into the Liverpool hotseat, and that is to win trophies and restore the club to its former glory days.
da 888: The German had previously led Borussia Dormund to two league titles and a handful of cup finals, including the 2013 Champions League final, which he lost narrowly. He came to the Westfalenstadion, stamped his authority and personality on the side and quickly won over the thousands of supporters that attend each home game.
But coming into Liverpool is a different cut of mustard. It’s a family club which despite falling of the pace a little over the past few years, still carries a certain level of expectation season-after-season and it’s fair to say that Liverpool fans will be a tad expectant going into the new campaign.
Klopp has the chance to seriously style the squad into whatever he wants and he’s begun doing that by cutting out some of the deadwood and by bringing in some fresh faces.
But there’s been some slight criticism from supporters who are a little underwhelmed by some of the names that have been brought through the Anfield doors this summer. The likes of Sadio Mane, Loris Karius, Joel Matip and most recently, Ragnar Klavan have entered the fray, with Georginio Wijnaldum and Alex Manninger also expected to sign in the coming days.
The grand total for this crop of players comes to around £70million and if we’re all being a little honest, some of us are scratching our heads a little.
You’ve only got to look across east where Manchester United haven’t hesitated in bringing in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for around £30million, who are astute, established signings.
That’s not to say Klopp’s crop can’t do an excellent job and surprise us all just as Leicester did last season, but many really think Liverpool are missing a “marquee man” in their current squad.
Whilst Mane and Wijnaldum are going to be the “star signings” of the summer, it just doesn’t have the same ring to it as Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan, who for some, are just better players. At the end of the day, Mane had two good seasons on the South Coast, whilst Wijnaldum couldn’t prevent Newcastle from relegation into the Championship.
Compare that with some of the other talent that has been on the move this summer and its perhaps understandable why some Reds’ supporters fans are feeling a little less optimistic than they thought. Other big names to have moved clubs this summer include Hulk, Mario Gotze, N’Golo Kante and Vincent Janssen. For the money Liverpool have spent, supporters just aren’t convinced Klopp has targeted the most convincing names.
But of course, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that new players can always start afresh and prove us all wrong when the move clubs. Leicester are a cracking example of that and they’ve essentially produced a handful of players who were once unknown but are now some of those desired names in world football.
Part of me says give these new signings a chance but there is plenty of other talent in the world I might have preferred. It seems the Anfield pressure is already beginning to build….
